Our team members led efforts to automate the federal courts in the U.S. and were responsible for many innovations subsequently adopted by the judiciary as a whole. Specific initiatives include the development of an integrated system of court information for support of judges, automation of the scheduling of hearings and measures to improve the accuracy of court records. One team member also designed and implemented the “electronic courtroom,” which has become a national standard. |

Discussing automated case management at a conference on information technology for Romanian judges. |
We have been actively involved in international court automation projects since 1997. In Bosnia, we participated in a project to automate several courts, with a particular focus on preparing pilot courts for automation. We worked closely with the courts to make certain their operational procedures were sound and would be compatible with an automated environment. We also addressed issues of staff training, security and physical renovations, and we wrote a handbook to guide court executives through the automation process. In Tajikistan, we assessed the courts’ automation needs and advised the courts on training programs, physical renovations and appropriate computer equipment to purchase. In Romania, we worked with judges to identify where investment in automation would be cost-effective and prudent.
